Sam Abell began his association with National Geographic in 1970. For the Geographic, he has produced twenty articles and a score of books and book chapters. In addition he has maintained an international career as an artist, writer, and teacher of photography. His principle books are Stay This Moment (in conjunction with a one-person exhibit at the International Center of Photography in New York City); Seeing Gardens (National Geographic, 2000); Sam Abell – The Photographic Life (Rizzoli, 2002); and, most recently, The Life of a Photograph (National Geographic, 2008). In addition to his acclaimed color work Abell has maintained a life long involvement with black and white photography.
