On Assignment:  Whidbey Island
Sam Abell, Instructor
August 13-18, 2012
Tuition:  $895

Join renowned photographer, author, and National Geographic veteran, Sam Abell, for an in-depth workshop designed to teach you editing, book making, and essay building skills. Sam's lifelong devotion to finely crafted images and skill in bookmaking will have you thinking deeply about the elements of good images, good design, and the lasting value of the photographic book.  Take advantage of this unique and rare opportunity to shoot along side Sam in the field.  He will be going "on assignment" with the class two of the five and half workshop days.  Also, enjoy private one-on-one sessions with Sam as well!

Building on the success of the 2010 Assignment: Whidbey workshop, Sam, along with course assistant Keron Psillas, will offer this book-building workshop again. Several key changes will enhance the participants learning and enjoyment. The course will last an additional half-day and there will be in class time dedicated to the layout and design of the book participants will create during this week.  Additionally, online publishing, social media, and blogging will be topics to explore, all designed to help the photographer find the perfect blend of vision and voice. Each student will choose a theme, with input from Sam, and develop a photo essay to be included in the book that will be published on Blurb following the completion of the course.  There will be one-on-one sessions with Sam during the week for each student. A celebratory dinner will be held on Friday night.

Advanced amateur students should have working knowledge of Photoshop, Lightroom, or Aperture, be able to develop and size their images, and bring a laptop to facilitate their work during the week. This is a digital photography class as film development is limited on Whidbey Island. Please submit a portfolio of ten recent images to PNWAS for review and acceptance. A link to your current website or blog is also suitable. Submit to:  karen@pacificnorthwestartschool.org.

The Pacific NorthWest Art School will impose a reasonable deadline that all students are to meet if they expect to have their images in this year’s book.  If they fail to meet this deadline their work will be omitted from the book. This policy is to ensure the prompt delivery of the book link for this year and going forward.
